Modification for beginners:
Dice with smaller numbers, Model game in a smaller group, fold area paper in half, laminate and use markers to save paper, don't use beans too many needed and too easy to disturb the board and lose array.
Modification for challenge student:
Graph paper with dice with larger numbers, Add their total area for their arrays, find perimeter for their arrays, Don't have them put counters on squares first, Ask them to find perimeter of each array - Do any of the arrays have the same number of tiles have different perimeters
